Dynamic training in professional & academic communication.

About

We founded MTA to create an environment where high quality teacher training and language training are prioritised. We are proud of the high standard of our courses; we do more than provide you with the generic materials and training that most leading institutions operate with today.

We provide tailored language development for individuals and small groups, timetabled to suit, with online components, tutorials and a flexible learning environment.   At most language schools the students fit into the class; at MTA we create the class to fit the student.  Our classes are smaller and we have the expertise to create materials for our students’ own specific development.  Because of this we are able to meet our students' needs faster and more effectively, leading to excellent results.

We are also passionate about foreign languages and embracing multiculturalism. We speak French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish.  Our awareness of how languages work has been gained through teaching across the globe.  Our extensive teacher-training experience, both in Australia and overseas, means that we are up-to-date with new methodologies and relevant advice for the 'international' teacher.  Our language classes are currently delivered to both skilled migrants as well as new arrivals to Australia seeking asylum in this country.

At MTA we are committed to moving towards paperless education, by using a combination of new technology and new approaches to teaching which focus on the students themselves as a resource.

We are situated in Melbourne CBD at level 13, 474 Flinders Street (Highlander Lane entrance).

We look forward to hearing from you and helping you meet your challenges..

Niki WalkerI have over 23 years experience as an ESL teacher and teacher educator. I have coordinated and delivered teacher training programmes for local and overseas teachers in Australia (primary, secondary and tertiary level) and Europe. I have also run teacher training courses in the UK, Canada, Czech Republic, Germany, Russia, and have taught ESL in France, Crete, Spain, Brazil, UK (Scotland and England). In Brazil, England and Austria I worked with business executives and lecturers to improve their communication skills.

Coming from a theatre background, I enjoy seeing how techniques used in drama translate into the ESL classroom. As someone who is constantly trying to improve my pronunciation in other languages, I am interested in developing techniques to help improve students’ pronunciation in English. Recently, I have been working on the development of online learning programmes.

Barbara MunroI have 20 years of experience teaching in a variety of contexts, from teaching young learners to teaching general English, academic and exam classes to international students and literacy to adults. Along with my teaching career I have now had 13 years of teacher training experience, which has taken me to the UK, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand and now Australia.

Training teachers is both challenging and rewarding. I love getting to know each individual, and being a part of helping each person to achieve their goals. I enjoy helping teachers understand grammar and become more student centred and effective. Recently I have developed a teaching model based on using discussions to develop better thinking and language for academic purposes.

Scott ClareI have over 10 years’ experience teaching English to speakers of other languages. I have taught in Australia, England and Japan and have taught General English, exam preparation classes, Business and Academic English as well as run teacher training for non-native speakers. I have worked as both a teacher and manager, however, enjoy my time in the classroom much more than in an office.

I loved learning about grammar and how it works. The workshop, and in particular Barbara Munro, provided me with "imperative" knowledge that took me to another - higher - step in my learning process. Without a proper grasp of grammar you're like a cannon that doesn't know how to fire: worthless"

I recently completed a CELTA course at MTA. Both Barbara and Niki have extensive teaching experience and provide practical insight into the world of ESL - they really prepare you for your teaching career. The course is of a very high standard and the practical teaching component is invaluable!

Thanks to my training with MTA I'm expanding my professional boundaries to English speaking countries and developing my business internationally. Best of all, I had so much fun learning with them that I forgot that I was learning! Now I'm speaking English all the time in a very natural way. My experience as your student was one of the best learning processes in my professional career. Now I'm doing my Masters and I feel completely confident about my communication skills.

Your grammar course renewed my interest from a more refreshing perspective!

Completing a CELTA program was essential in terms of being able to secure employment in the highly competitive Beijing ESL market and provided excellent preparation for teaching. The opportunity to deliver real-life classes is a unique and extremely valuable component of the course and was key to building confidence in the classroom. While the program is an intense experience it was thoroughly enjoyable and one I'd recommend to anyone considering teaching English as a second language.

As a  non-native English language teacher I decided to take the CELTA course in order to refresh my skills and boost my career.
Niki and Barbara are experts in teaching methodology and language analysis; they helped me in improving my teaching style and adapting new teaching techniques.  At MTA, the CELTA course has been a real eye-opener.

I did a CELTA with Niki in 2007 and found it to be a really useful course. It was interesting, challenging, and it equipped me with many skills and dynamic classroom ideas which I have found invaluable in my teaching career since then.

With my CELTA qualification, I found it easy to secure ESL work in Chile. The course is very interesting and enjoyable. Niki is a perfect role model for any new teacher. She is extremely inspirational and has filled me with the confidence to teach any student at any level of English. Thank you Niki.

CELTA will give a great start to a first time teacher or a boost to one with experience already. Your teaching will improve in leaps and bounds and so will your confidence.
